Our Mission & Vision
Our mission is to glorify God through our worship and by sharing His message of love with everyone in our local Southampton comminuity and beyond.
Southampton Seventh-day Adventist Church strives to be a spiritual home for the young and old. A place where we can grow together in faith, support one another and learn from each other with God as our guide.
Our History
Southampton Church played a key role in the history of the Seventh-day Adventist movement in the Britain. The initial work of evangelism in Southampton was carried out by William Ings who returned from America in May 1879. Ings, who had local relations, was born in Dorset before emigrating to the United States with his parents. He was later that year joined by John Lougborough an American missionary.
By January 1880, the "Tract and Missionary Society" was established at "Ravenswood", a rented building on 252 Shirley Road. This provided living accommodation for the missionary workers as well as a meeting place. In September 1883, the first Seventh-day Adventist Church in Britain was officially organised at Ravenswood.
Through God’s blessing of public meetings and literature evangelism (colporteur work), the membership of the small group grew rapidly necessitating the purchase of a church building - “The Academy” on 157 Shirley Road where our church remains. This church building was officially opened on 28 September 1895. From this hub, the gospel of Christ was spread to other cities in the British Isles, as depicted by the three angels of Revelation 14.

Church Building & Adventist Heritage Centre Project
Our congregation is in great need of a larger worship space with additional rooms for our children's classes and other activities. We praise God that our offer on the sale of the former United Reformed Church, also on Shirley Road, has been accepted.
Prior to the sale, the building was occupied by squatters. Many of the internal fixtures were stolen or damaged. A complete renovation will be needed, including electrical installation, replacing the heating system and repair of several leaks in the roof.
In addition to having a new place of worship, our plan is to create the first Adventist heritage centre in the British Isles. Southampton church was the first Adventist church to be established in the British Isles and several of the early church pioneers including Ellen White visited the church.
To fund this project, we will require £500,000 for renovations and development of the site. We invite you to partner with us on this project through your donations and prayers so that we can build a lasting memorial to spur us on in the work of spreading the gospel in this territory.
